My Personal Shakeology Experience

I have contemplated writing this post over and over again. I didn’t know if it would be… I don’t know if the word is “inappropriate”, but I didn’t know if it was something that people would want to know. After I thought more about it, and saw some comments people made about “shakes” in general, I KNEW that I needed to write about MY experience with Shakeology!

Word around the block is that Shakeology is a “weight loss” meal replacement shake. I am here to tell you, that is not the REASON behind this product. Of course, weight loss might be an added bonus, or having it for breakfast makes your life a whole lot easier, BUT that was not the pure intention Beachbody had when creating this masterpiece!

Here is a quick list of perks to Shakeology that are easily over looked:

 Honestly, I could talk to 10 different people that drink Shakeology, and they would all have a different success story for it. That is the beauty of it; when you have proper nutrition, amazing things start to happen. Today I am here to tell you MY story!! Maybe others will come to follow 🙂

I started Shakeolgy in March of 2012. Yes, I know the picture is a weight loss picture, just because, well to be honest, that is what MOST people want to see. I lost 6 pounds within the first 6 weeks just from replacing a chocolate shakeology for my normal grab and go unhealthy breakfast. I wasn’t doing any daily physical activity except walking back and forth to campus a few times a day. So that about wraps up the weight loss side of Shakeolgy; don’t get me wrong, I LOOOOVE this weight loss transformation, but my other benefit from Shakeology tops this like  CRAZZZYY!

So, guys might not understand this as much as girls do, but it is here for everyone to read! Remember, this is me coming out of my little bubble and explaining something rather personal, yet amazing with all of you.

About a year before I started Shakeology I would get a yeast infection EVERY month the week before “my time of the month”. Yes, girls, ughhhh AWFUL right!? I went to the doctor and they told me that I have a hormone imbalance during that week getting ready for all that FUN stuff to happen. She told me that I could get this special pill that is about $22 a bottle and either take it everyday, or everyday the week before it normally happens. At the time I was 20 years old, the LAST thing I wanted to do was worry about taking medicine everyday to prevent this occurrence from happening monthly.– Let me just tell you, those were two miserable weeks out of EACH MONTH of the year! So, of course I sought out those pills bought them and waited. It helped a little, but I still got the infections and even though they were somewhat “tamed” I still didn’t want to live my life like that.

When I was introduced to Shakeology, I honestly just got it because I wanted to be a coach, and I like a good discount! Weight loss crossed my mind a few times, but I seriously just loved the taste and the convenience of it! Butttttt, after a month or two I noticed that I was only miserable ONE week out of the month, and not two anymore!

The thing is… Shakeology has this “stuff” called probiotics that help out my little situation. Plus so many other super foods, vitamins and minerals to keep everything stable. I am proud to say that I haven’t had a yeast infection for over a year now! For me, that is enough to keep Shakeology in my cabinet for the rest of my life!!

I know it might not be a glamorous story, but sometimes people need to know that there is more to these SHAKES than what meets the eye. For me, making this decision was one of the best I ever made, of course I am not saying that it is going to cure everything that is wrong with everyone, but it deff can work wonders!

Where are all my fellow shorties at!?

The definition of short might be different to different people. I know people close to 5 inches taller than me that think THEY are short! I am a college student just under 5 feet tall. Yup that’s right, I haven’t reached the 5 foot mark yet 😡 (…they say you can have your last growth spurt at 25ish right…. well I guess there is still a small dose of hope left for me!)

Aside from that fact that I may or may not grow anymore in my lifetime is beyond the point I am trying to get at here! Let me get back to my main point, why short people SHOULD workout at home.

I have been into health and fitness my whole life, I may not have been the ALL STAR on the team, but I was physically active basically from kindergarten; as soon as I could sign up for AYSO soccer. As I got older, as I’m sure many of you noticed, you get more opportunities to become a better athlete. Do you know where I am going with this? YES. EXERCISE! Hitting the gym and getting in rep after rep, increasing your weights, and developing that STRENGTH that we all know and love.

In high school I never really noticed that the gym wasn’t FIT for me, as many of your shorties out there might not have noticed yet either. I used mostly free weights and the treadmill, it is kind of hard to mess that up! People of all ages and sizes can lay on a bench and knock out a few sets of a dumbbell bench press, or run miles upon miles on the treadmill.

Then I got to college, FREEDOM, right? Well my college journey is a whole other story, so I’ll just stick to the fitness side of things for your sake 🙂 Don’t get me wrong, college and university gyms, rec centers (whatever you want to call them) are Ahhhh-MAZing! They have rows and rows of treadmills, a weight machines that SEEM to be so awesome and replace the use of free weights.

Okay, HOLD UP! Have the people that are my size used these machines!? Because if you have, I am sure you have noticed it’s a little awkward. No, I do not mean trying to up your weight and start making grunting nosies, or your face turns red and that HUGE vein in your forehead pops out… oh, am I one of the only people that has that? If you know what I am talking about then please laugh WITH me, because you know EXACTLY where I am coming from on that one!

Let’s talk about how the foot rests are SO FAR away from the seat, HELLO my legs are NOT that long!! I have to sit totally on one end or the other of the seat just to reach those babies all the way down there! It is a little hard to have proper posture/form when only my tippy toes are on the foot rest and my butt is clenched on the seat so I don’t fall off.. am I painting a realistic enough picture for you?!

So I don’t think I need to go machine by machine for you to get that these inventions are NOT made for “our kind”, they are made for the average and above sized person! Yes, they make the adjustable seats, but sometimes that just isn’t enough!! I need ALL parts just be adjustable, not just one or two.

So how are we supposed to lose weight, tone our awesome bods and get that peak performance style energy we crave for at the gym? Well, we can just WOKOUT AT HOME!!!

Say what!? How am I going to get that defined “V”, or sculpted shoulders from an at home DVD. Let me just tell you, not only CAN it happen, it HAS happened! I have completed many different Beachbody programs from the Ultimate Reset to Les Mills Combat, and many in between. Recently I just completed the newest program the 21 Day Fix, HELLO MUSCLES!! I will not go too far into detail and save that for a later post, but 7 pounds lost and my shoulder and back muscles are looking mighty fine if you ask me!

21 Day FixThe best part about the Beachbody programs, is the each one has a personal trainer and MORE THAN ONE DVD to do. If you get a “program” that comes with one DVD and maybe 2 different workouts on it, you are going to get BORED, and pretty fast if you are anything like me! I like variety, something new all the time! When a program comes with 6 or more DIFFERENT workouts, now that is what makes one happy girl!

Going to the gym you can of course get a trainer, but that means you have to workout in front of that trainer and all the other people there as well. This might not embarrass everyone, but imagine being that short person that you just CANNOT do the workout right because the equipments is not the proper size. Plus at home programs, usually use free weights or bands, because you don’t NEED anything else! A personal trainer at a gym is going to take advantage of using all that “oversized” equipment, and rightfully so! Too bad that stuff isn’t going to get us short people 100% of the results that it will for someone of an average size.

Don’t get me wrong, the gym can be a GREAT place to go and get into the ZONE, but if you aren’t getting 100% of the results, or the effectiveness of the equipment you are using, what’s the point!? Find something that you enjoy, and can FEEL the difference, I am telling you,  it will blow your mind how the machines that should fit everyone, really DON’T!!

This dish right here is one of my all time favorites!! If you would have told me the ingredients in this AMAZING dinner, I would have never even touched it 😡

If you look back to some of the older posts, I did the Beachbody Ultimate Reset (www.myultimatereset.com/alyssaraeb), and one of the reasons was to broaden my food palette. I was such a picky eater! I loved pasta and pizza, and didn’t stray too far from those two foods. Once I started on a healthier lifestyle (after I outgrew my ” I can eat whatever I want and not gain a single pound” years) I decided I needed to find recipes that I LOVED, and WANTED to eat! Which, let’s be honest, it can be challenging at first! Sooo, the Ultimate Reset really helped me out, and of course a little weight loss was on the PLUS side!

The one recipe that I loved and I STILL make very often is the Roasted Root Medley. I am not sure if this is the exact recipe, I think I have changed bits and pieces here and there to make it my own (I really don’t remember!)

So the ingredients are super cheap and easy to find!

Ingredients:

  • Carrots
  • Beets
  • Sweet Potato
  • Onion
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Pink Himalayan Salt

Now, of course you will first want to wash your vegetables! I like seeing dirt, because  know there is a lower chance of weird waxes or anything on them! When you live in the middle of PA it makes it a little hard to get fresh fruits and vegetables from a farmers market all year round. I do what I can and buy from them while I can though!

image_1Step one: Wash the carrots! I usually use one large, or 2 small/medium carrots. It all just depends on how much you want to make! 2-3 small carrots are enough for about 2 servings from what I have found. Then chop carrots up in about 1 inch pieces, small enough to be bite size, yet not too big that they will take forever to bake all the way through!

image_2Step two: Wash your sweet potato! I use either one large or most of two small sweet potatoes. You will be surprised how far just ONE will go! After you scrub it down, peel the skin off and any blemishes that you see. Or anything you wouldn’t want to eat :p Then, just like with the carrots, chop into about 1 inch cubes. I find that placing the sweet potatoes in the microwave for a minute or two helps tremendously for cutting purposes. The first few times I made this I may have had a large cutting knife, but recently, I just COULD NOT cut through those sweet potatoes!! I do have a small knife this time, due to moving around because I am still in college. At this point I also like to start to preheat my oven! I have an oldie so it takes A LONG TIME to heat up! Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.

image_4Step three: Now it is time to wash and cut the beets! I had a hard time with this one! My knife kept getting stuck!! I warn you to BE CAREFUL if this happens! I didn’t hurt or cut myself, but there were a few close calls! i bet you can guess what the next step is for the beets! We have already washed them, so yup, we are cutting them into about 1 inch cubes!! I personally make them a little smaller because I have grown to “like”beets, but I don’t “love” them! HAHA! So I tend to make those cubes a little smaller. But, hey, feel free to knock yourself out with HUGE beet pieces if you would like! I won’t stop you 🙂

image_6Step four: Onion time!! Yes, the dreaded onion! I don’t know about you, but cutting onions is the WORST part of cooking! I cry and cry an cry, well tears just roll down my face! BUT!!! This time I have tamed it down just a little, if I rinse my knife under cold water between each time I make a cut, it didn’t make my eyes run too terribly! Once again, chop these babies up! These I usually am not too concerned about the size, I just chop up a few handfuls and call it a day.

image_7Now grab your EVOO and Pink Himalayan Salt!! It is time to use these ingredients!

image_8Step five: I like to then move everything to a bigger bowl if I didn’t calculate correctly the first time!! Now that there is room to toss, grab your EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) and I usually put about 1-2 tablespoons in, stir everything around a little bit, and see if everything is evenly coated, if not, slowly add more until all vegetables are covered!

image_9Step six: This step is super, super easy!! Just grab a pinch or two of Pink Himalayan Salt!! Then stir in so that it is evenly distributed throughout the entire dish!

image_11Step seven: Now it is time to bake! I personally like to grab a cookie sheet and cover it with foil. (I use a TON of foil! I cook and bake with it or almost every meal!) This just makes a very easy clean up!! So I then pour all of the vegetables into this covered sheet and place it in the oven at 400 degrees F. I would let this bake for 45 minutes to an hour! But every 15-20 mins go ahead and stir these around so they don’t get dried out or burn. Scoop out, and enjoy!!

I am about half way through week TWO of my fifth and final year of college!!! So exciting, sad but exciting!! I think I am about ready to move on into the real world! ( AHHH–did I just say that :x)

My last post was about my favorite apps that I use ALL THE TIME!! This one is just to follow up on that! For my last post, I wasn’t using my TIME MANAGEMENT skills, and ended up running out of time before I could finish!!

image_3Charity Miles is such a GREAT app! A few people have asked me if it is a scam or not, but I really don’t think it is. It is a free app and you get to pick a charity they have listed for you to donate to. You then choose if you are running, walking, or biking. You begin and it keep track of your distance and time. When you are finished it lets you know how many minutes of research you earned, or how many meals will be donated to a mother, child, or soldier in need. The charity you choose is totally up to you!! Even if I know I am just going on a 5-10 minute walk, I alway use this! I think it is a great ay to give back, I am going something good for my body by working out, plus it makes me feel great inside to know that I can help someone else while even doing something for myself.

 

image_4This one is a new one I have found. I am not going to lie to you, I kind of have no idea how to use it. I know that it gives you challenges and you can get badges and stuff, like points. But The overall app still confuses me. It looks super cool, and the challenges are pretty awesome. There is definitely an activity in there for EVERYONE! I saw a few for swimming, hiking, running, lifting.. the list goes on and on! I know that you can base it off of beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, beyond that, I am a little clueless. SORRY EVERYONE! I know this is supposed to be me telling you about the apps. I just know that this is a cool one, and one of these days I will get it all figured out! haha

 

image_5This is by far one of the BEST apps I have ever found!! All you basically need is a barcode to scan and an internet/ wifi connection. You scan a food that you want to know the nutritional information on. This is perfect for people that don’t understand nutritional labels, or don’t look in too much detail in the list of ingredients.  When you scan an item it grades it on  a scale from A to D-. I honestly don’t even know if there is anything below a D-, I am too scared to scan anything and see something with a nutritional value that low! haha Either way, it is a very simple scale that we can all relate too, which is what I love about it! Then if it does rate it low, it tells you WHYYYY. The best part is it explains out what the WHY is! So if there is some weird ingredient in the product, it explains what that is and what it does. Another awesome feature of this app is that it gives you suggestions for alternatives! It then also rates those on a scale from A-D.

It has been FOREVERRRRRR since I have blogged!! I don’t know where the time has gone. In all seriousness, my summer has gone so fast I still think we are in the month of May sometimes 😡 I know we aren’t so Ill just move on from that!

This past summer I was honored to have an internship in a graphic design and marketing department. I LOVED it!! Which makes me so happy, because if you have read my post before about my schooling journey, you know that I have been through everything and back to find out what I really wanted to do!

At my “internship”, I put that in quotes because I am not really sure what to call it. I wasn’t getting school credits for it, but it was more than a summer job. Anyway, I met so many great people! i ate lunch everyday with three awesome women, they threw parties for ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING!! I learned so many things from that guy that is their main graphic artist. It was really nice being able to be in an environment that was so positive all the time, a great work place, and just everything about it it, again was GREAT!!

One aspect of this summer that was NOT all that great was trying to find a routine. I always have an awesome, right on time routine for the school year. So I figured, summer should be SOOO easy! I will have the same hours everyday and all that jazz. Well, I was WRONG! But, the thing is, I just can’t put my finger on WHAT it was that threw me so off. The only thing I can think of is that it was really hand for me to find time to RUN! My work schedule was the same everyday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. I would eat lunch around noon, if I didn’t pack an afternoon snack I would be STARVING by the time I got home, so of course I had to eat something. That means that I would just try to eat dinner, but until I made dinner, ate, cleaned up, and digested, it was too dark to run outside, and I don’t own a treadmill. Then of course I thought, “Why not just get up and run before work!?” WRONG! I don’t have a problem getting up at 6:30 or even 6:00. 5:30 though, I just COULD NOT do it. My body must have a DO NOT DISTURB switch that can’t be touched until 6 am! I Tried once, and I made it to 9:30 am and I needed a nap! Usually if i get up early and run, it energizes me, but I guess there is a fine line for when that works, and when it doesn’t!

 

Okay, time to end my rant about that! i am finally moved back into my NEW place at school, and have been TOTALLY RELAXED all week! Yup, that is right, I have been basically a couch potato, almost. I have been working out, and attempting to eat pretty healthy. I will have a bunch of recipes to come within the next few days!!

Today, was my very lazy day. It was the only day I didn’t have a single thing planned to do. My day was open, I didn’t have to go anywhere, or see anyone. So naturally, I did a lot of sitting. i did make a healthy breakfast, I had oatmeal with agave nectar, and an apple. Then i made my way to my parents to pick up a few things, which was good to get me up and around. I made a few errands, but eventually found myself sitting in front of the tv again!! I figured out a way to fix this! I made a TV workout!!

I did this workouts while watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians! It was great! Of course it isn’t something that is going to get your heart rate up there and you can sit at home everyday doing this while you watch tv from 9 am to 9 pm. It will, however, prevent you from feeling guilty after watching a few of your favorite shows, and just give you something to do besides just sitting there!!

I have not been able to talk to everyone in such a long time! I am so sorry about that! i am going to really work my hardest to post for you ladies and gents more often!! Of course as most of you know I am completely obsessed with SHAKEOLOGY! It has been a game changer for me, as well as many others. However, I do like to switch it up once and a while! I did a little research and came up with Inside out Shakeology Peanut Butter cups!

I was like wow, this is perfect since I have been on a slight candy kick for some reason lately! I have no idea where it came from! So this recipe was really easy, I thought I would give it a try!

The ingredients are simple:

2 table spoons of each: Chocolate Shakeology, coconut oil, water, PB (or PB2)

Then some mini muffin FOIL holders

Step one: Melt Coconut oil. Step two: add PB or PB2 to coconut oil Step three: place Shakeology in a seperate bowl

I used regular peanut butter, the recipe called for chocolate PB2. I honestly wish I would have taken the time to go to the store and get the proper ingredient! It wasn’t horrible with regular peanut butter, I just think it would have been AMAZING with chocolate PB2.

 

Step 4: slowly add water to Shakeology powder. You should eventually see a pudding like mixture. I added more water after taking this picture to get the perfect consistency!

Step five: place a small amount of PB/Coconut oil in bottom of foil liners, then a layer of Shakeology/ water mixture, then another layer of the PB/ Coconut oil mixture

I have been talking to my cousin about fried rice for a while now! We are both obsessed with rice, let alone fried rice!! So I decided to whip up my own concoction, and see how it goes!!

It is a very simple and easy recipe! Also, I think most of the ingredients are stables in the home!

Ingredients:

1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin OliveOil

1 Teaspoon Toasted Sesame Oil

1 Egg

1 Cup Cooked Brown Rice

4-6 Baby Carrots- Chopped

4-6 Mushrooms – Chopped

Bragg Aminos- to taste

 

Method:

1. Turn heat on low-medium. Add oils to pan.

2. Add egg and cook until almost fully cooked

3. Add Carrots and Mushrooms to egg and Oil

4. Add Cooked Brown Rice

5. Cook until vegetables are soft!

6. Turn heat off and remove from heat, add Bragg Aminos

I found this recipe on Pinterest, and I have been waiting for FOREVER to try it! I was waiting to get some protein powder hehe!

Ingredients:

For Pancake Roll-ups:
1/4 cup Low fat plain greek yogurt (I used Chobani™)
1/2 scoop Plain or vanilla protein powder (my protein powder is 100 calories per 1/4 cup scoop)
1/2 tsp Baking powder
2 Egg whites
1/2 cup Oats (regular old fashioned oats, or gluten free if sensitive)
1/4 cup Strawberries, chopped (about 2 large strawberries)
1/8 cup Water
3-5 pkts Stevia (or sweetener to taste)
For Yogurt Filling:
1/2 cup Low fat Greek yogurt (I used Chobani™)1
2 tbs Low sugar strawberry jam
1-2 pkts Stevia (or sweetener to taste)

Nutrition Breakdown

2 Large Pancakes
131 Calories Per Pancake
28 g Carbohydrates
5 g Fiber
15 g Protein (w/out filling)
2 g Sugar

THE ESTIMATED TOTAL TIME TO MAKE THIS RECIPE IS 15-20 MINUTES.

1 ) Put all of the ingredients for the pancakes in a blender and blend until smooth!
2 ) Meanwhile, heat a nonstick griddle (or large nonstick skillet) coated with cooking spray over medium heat. Spoon 1/2 of the batter (if making 2 large pancakes) OR 1/4 of the batter (if making 4 smaller pancakes) onto pre-heated griddle. Turn pancakes over when tops are covered with bubbles and edges look cooked. Remove from griddle when both sides are cooked, and place pancakes on a serving plate.
3)  To make the filling, simply mix Greek yogurt (or cottage cheese puree) with jam (or diced/crushed strawberries) and sweetener in a small bowl. Divide filling between pancakes, and roll pancakes up around filling. Place roll-ups on plate seam-side down so they stay rolled, or secure with a toothpick! Serve with strawberries, low sugar jam, or low sugar maple syrup if desired! Enjoy!

Beachbody Ultimate Reset Review

So sorry I am a few weeks behind on this!! my computer decided it didn’t like to connect to the internet anymore 🙁 Oh well, I figured out a way to get it to work, so i am back in business!!

After thinking about it, I kind of like the fact that I didn’t write a review that day after I was done with the Reset. The reason being that now I had a chance to get back to my “normal” life and see how things have changed for me!

So as a total I lost 10.8 pounds! YUPP almost 11 pounds GONE! I was really surprised, because honestly I didn’t think I had THAT much to lose. However, the places that I was the most focused on losing the weight is where I saw the BEST results. It is almost like my body was like okay, lets keep a little of the fat here, lets lose A LOT here, and just a tad over there! I know that isn’t the way it works, but it fits! I was really hoping to see the most weight loss in my lower stomach, hips, and thighs. To my surprise, those are the EXACT areas that I think most of the 10.8 pounds came from.

M energy was super high, I was in an AMAZING mood almost all the time. I did get a cold during the third week. That put me down a little, but it was bound to happen when you babysit 5 kids and at least 2 were sick every time I babysat! It wasn’t a bad cold, just a little head one!!

I work wake up totally refreshed in the morning, and fall asleep at night with no issue at all. I have an incredibly busy schedule, so I think if I could pull this off, ANYONE can do it!

I think I would have been nice to do it with a buddy, if someone I lived with did it with me, I think it would have made things 100xs easier. You could take turns cooking, or at least not have everyone else eating something different than you! haha

Okay, I think I am ready to show my before and after pictures!!! I know the before pictures aren’t all that great 🙁 but they were the best I could do with awful college apartment lighting and no sun outside!! haha

Altogether I would say that this was an AMAZING experience. Over the past 6 months I have really gotten deep down in in tune with my body on all sorts of levels. Training and running a half marathon was my first experience. It taught my body how to not say no its itself and how to push past the “I can’t” voice in my head. It also made me so aware of how the body works, body, mind and soul. Doing the Ultimate reset was my last piece to totally understand my body. It made me realize how my body worked with the food I was providing for it. I was now aware of the feelings I got while digesting certain foods and the outcomes of those foods. I learned how to eat different foods I never thought I would ever try in a million years. This experience has also taught me that I DO have time to prepare healthy meals and lunches on the go. I was only making excuses before, now I know there aren’t any excuses big enough to interfere with a healthy lifestyle.

I did not keep eating vegan, however, I did cut back on my dairy. I am cautious of adding cheese to different healthy foods. There are a ton of recipes I still use, and LOVE THEM!! They say that as you get older your days go by faster and faster. If that is the case I hate to see what my life is like in 5 years from now! It is going to be such a blur! hahaha I hope things will settle down soon enough, and I am sure they will. So I have been really slacking on taking pictures of all my meals. Ugh I know, SO SORRY!!

 

So right now I am on my last week of the Reset. Thursday will be my last day! So crazy how fast it went! i have to be honest with everyone, I took a cheat day!! I know, I know, it is only 21 days, but I got a really bad cold and the thought of a salad was the farthest thing from my mine! I had some chicken noodle soup, and peanuts butter toast that day. I didn’t eat terrible, just something  a little easier on the stomach.

 

I took a picture on day 11, I have a comparison here for you!! I lost about 7 pounds so far 🙂 I only see a little difference in the picture, but I don’t think the picture does any justice!

The only picture I have right now of food is day 14 or 15 dinner. It was a baked sweet potato, quinoa, and garlic veggies! Although I do really like the reset, I will be happy when I can make my own decision on what I want to eat! I know that i can tweak the meals, but I am trying my hardest to stay as close to the meal plan as possible. I figure that they made it like that for a reason! hahaha I am starting to miss my eggs and fish! I don’t really miss the meat too much. Well I would have a Buffalo Chicken Pizza as a cheat meal, I DO miss that!! It is just hard when you are craving other healthy foods, but they are meats or dairy. But I know that this is so worth it!
