As promised I told you I would give you all my secrets to how I fall asleep like a pro. You are probably wondering why I don’t say “sleep like a baby”. Well, let’s look at it this way, most babies CRY themselves to sleep! So, you will not find me giving you that as a tip!
There is one thing that I do EVERY NIGHT as soon as I lay down in bed; if I didn’t do it before that. I MAKE A LIST!! How many times do you lay there thinking of what you were SUPPOSED to get done that day that you didn’t and what all you are going to have to do tomorrow?– If you didn’t realize it before, well I am sure you are starting to think, “Oh yeah, I DO do that!”
Our minds are going to keep on going until we put that information somewhere else, you know out of sight out of mind, well how about out of mind out of worry? –ehh I’ll work on it!
Most smart phones have a Notes section, on the iPhone they call it, NOTES hahahah! You can always use pen and paper as well, but who doesn’t have their phone on them all the time, this way you can check it throughout the day. One way to stay on track throughout your day, and not worry about all of this STUFF at night is to just write down! Every night write down a list of things you have to do the next day, yeah I know, this sounds kind of simple, maybe even dumb. But honestly, if you write it down, it is one less thing on your mind!
Now, of course this isn’t ALWAYS going to make you fall asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow, I bet 80% of the time it will though. Actually I need to have a little more faith in this, I would even go as far as 90%. So what about that other 10-20% of the time?
I don’t know how familiar you are with meditating… Don’t stop reading here and thing I am going all hippie or whatever on you. That is just the only word I can think of instead of just “relaxing” and then you would probably be like, ” IF I COULD, I WOULD!!”
So this is what I do when my list doesn’t seem to work. I do a breathing technique. It is super easy an honestly, no one will even know you are doing it. When I lay there and can’t sleep because I have something else on my mind besides my To-Do list, I breathe and clear my mind. Simple right? But what exactly do I do?
While you lay there get comfy, then close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. Do that once or twice, once you have that down, dig even deeper! Visualize the air you breathe in go in your nose, and into your lungs. See them fill up with air and inflate, then as you breathe out, they deflate and come back out through your nose.
You might think I am crazy for telling you this, but I promise you it will work, if you do it right! There are times I try to concentrate on my breathing and unless you are 100% on THAT, it might not work for you. I have tried to keep track of how many times I have to do this to fall asleep. I think the most I can remember is three times going in and out as one time.
